Protect Your Wedding Dress before The Wedding
Odds are your wedding dress will be the most complex, important, and expensive garment you ever purchase. Caring for a wedding dress at home can seem intimidating, but these easy tips can help you plan to ensure your gown is perfect on the big day:
Thoroughly examine your gown before you bring it home from the bridal salon. If you notice stains, a dingy hem, or even missing / damaged lace or beadwork, don't be shy about asking to have the issue corrected.
Never store your gown in a plastic garment bag or vacuum-pack. Plastics emissions can turn white textiles yellow, and poor circulation of air allows mildew to form on gowns.
Be sure to bring a wedding day emergency kit for on-site touchups. A needle, thread, stain-spotting sticks and cornstarch (to absorb greasy stains) is a good start for your gown cleaning gear.
When storing your gown on a hanger, be careful to hook the straps sewn in specifically for hanging, not by the bodice or shoulder seams.
Keep your gown in an out-of the way part of your home, not easily accessed by pets or children.
If you're storing your gown more than six months ahead of the wedding, considering bringing it in for a professional touch-up at a date close to the ceremony.
Consider how the gown will be transported to the wedding venue. If you're in the Los Angeles area, The Wedding Gown Specialists offers deliver with many of our gown cleaning and pressing services.
Have your wedding gown cleaned immediately after your wedding. The longer you wait, the more difficult it is to correct blemishes.
Store your preserved gown in a part of your house that’s well-ventilated, protected from harsh light, and consistently 60 - 90* F. Extreme storage conditions are the number one cause of excessive wedding dress aging.
